Nvidia has alwaysbeen first in launching benchmark setting mobile processors for a long time ,and with another year over ,Nvidia has once again claimed the benchmark title to itself with the new Tegra X1 Syetem on a chip . This new Tegra chip is said to be the first "Octa-core" tegra processor from the company and according to preliminary benchmarks , the chip is also the first mobile processor to reach one Teraflop of floating point performance (which is close to most high end consoles like the Xbox One) - this number has been achieved thanks to 256 Maxwell GPU cores which is the same GPU architecture found in the new GTX980 series of graphics cards in high end gaming pc's .To put it into perspective , the first supercomputer to break the teraflop barrier in 2000 (ASCI Red) needed 76 Pentuim Pro processors and a million watts to power it .Raw CPU power to the chip is provided by 8 64 bit cores comprising of 4+4 islands with 4 Cortex A57 cores with 2MB of L2 cache and 4 Cortex A53 cores with 512KB cache .The chip is said to double on performance over the Tegra K1 launched last year and it is shown to beat the Apple A8x chip found in the new iPad Air 2 . The processor has support for LPDDR4 with a bandwidth of 25.6GB/s . The chip also has the ability to output 4K video (2160p -3840x2160) at 60 frames per second , the chip can also output video using HDMI 2.0 , HDCP 2.2 with support for new standards such as H.264,H.265(10bit -2160p),VP8,VP9 and 600 MP (600 megapixels per second) JPEG encoding and decoding . The chip supports Unreal Engine 5 , DirectX 12 , OpenGL 4.5 , OpenGL ES 3.1 ,CUDA (nvidia) and Android Extensions .
Nvidia hopes to launch the mobile "superchip" during the first half of 2015 , the target market includes smartphones and Tablets (We expect to see this chip in Nvidia's next Shield Tablet) as well as automobiles in the form of a car computer system called NVIDIA DRIVE PX . The system uses two X1 processors to calculate distance and other information from 12 omni-directional cameras to help the car auto -navigate and park itself , as well as provide surround vision . The PX system is said to go live during the second half of this year .
Nvidia also launched another automotive related system called NVIDIA DRIVE CX - this system
will basically act as your in car entertainment system (Nvidia's Tegra 3 and 4 chips are already used by Audi and Tesla with their in Car systems) with the ability to handle almost all tasks demanded in a modern car environment such as navigation , audio /video playback and substitute analog buttons in climate control functions . The CX system will also be available for automakers by the second half of this year
