The fight between Intel and Amd is as old as the cold war , but one clear winner was evident by the last decade.Amd , who has not given up the race revealed the Ryzen series which has created a storm over Intel's chipfactories for a few months now . The new 16 core Ryzen Threadripper and the regular Ryzen 5 and 7 series may have an edge in cost for performance , but now Intel has regained the upper hand once again with the Core X series i9 , i7 and i5 models .
Set to join the Dreadnought wars , the Core i9 comes in 4 variants , The Core i9-7900X,i9-7920X,i9-7940X ,i9-7960X and the i9-7980XE basically differ in the core/thread count and thats all we know for now . The base version i9-7900X , features 10 cores with 20 threads (with Hyperthreading) while the 7920X features 12 cores/24 threads , 7940X with 14 cores /28 threads and the 7960X with 16 cores/32 threads and the 7980XE with 18 cores / 36 threads. The base version , clocked to 3.3GHz ( 4.3GHz Turbo Boost) 2.0 clock speed with (4.5GHz Turbo) Boost 3.0 clock speed. The 7900X features 4 channel DDR4-2666 and 44 PCIexpress 3.0 lanes . The chip has 13.75 MB of L3 cache memory onboard . The chip is priced at a eye watering $999.which is cheaper than the rest which sell for $1199, $1399, $1699, and $1999.
The Core X i7 , which now sits as the mid range option , comes as the Core i7-7740 and i7-7820X . The base model 7740X comes as a quadcore model with 8 threads while a Skylake X model with the same model number has 6 cores and 12 threads . The non skylake model has 4.3Ghz base with 4.5Ghz turbo . There is 8MB L3 cache . 16 PCIe 3.0 channels and a two channel DDR4-2666 memory it also has TDP(thermal design power) of 112w . The Skylake model on the other hand has 3.5Ghz base speed with boost upto 4.0 Ghz , 8.25 MB of L3 cache is present as well as 28 PCIe lanes , 4 channel DDR-2400 memory and a TDP of 140W .
The i7-7820X has 8 cores 16 threads with a RDP of 140w .The chip has 3.6Ghz base and 4.3Ghz on turbo , there is also support for Turbo Boost 3.0 with 4.5Ghz . The chil features 11MB of L3 cache and has 28PCIe 3.0 lanes . There is also DDR4-2666 memory support as well .
The i7-7740X , is priced at $339 , the Skylake 7740X costs $389 and the i7-7820X costs $599
The entry level Core X model anounced now is the Core i5-7640X . The chip , with 4 Ghz base speed and 4.2Ghz turbo features 6MB L3 cache , 16 PCIe lanes and DDR4-2666 support as well . The TDP is 112W . The chip is expected to cost $242.
The new Intel Core X models unveiled today are based on the LGA2066/X299 "Basin falls" pin , the models presented here are Kaby Lake X with some Skylake X exceptions . More information will be available soon .
