The next major "installment" of Microsoft's operating system is official - Say hello to Windows 11. The new update, which will be free for windows 10 users during the end of 202, focuses on bringing a more clean and light operating system for millions of computers worldwide.
New Features.
Apart from the new design language - which now features a centrally placed start and app shortcut tray (you can move it to the left if you need to), the whole interface features a more "glass" inspired theme a la Windows 7 and enhances the flat iconography of Windows 10. Gone are the flat colors of most file icons and apps and instead you get a more 3d theme which borrows some elements from the linux camp in some ways. The new interface also features a "curved edge" to menus giving it a more clean menu and the tiles of yesteryear are finally gone in the start menu. - instead replaced with app icons and listings.
The new interface also features a quick notification side bar and a daily news slide which you can expand by dragging to the right. Windows 11 is also said to be touch friendly and therefore it will work well not only with traditional PC's but also convertible and touch screen devices.Like most modern mobile and desktop operating systems the new OS will feature a light and dark mode as well.
Speaking of touch screens, the new Windows 11 update features the biggest upgrade to date - support for Android apps. Traditionally, Windows and Android has had a bit of a rocky relationship in the past, but as the saying goes - if you can't beat them - join them, the new update brings Android apps - but not through Google's play store - but Amazon's own Amazon Appstore. These apps - which are to be downloaded through the Amazon Appstore has almost all major titles and will allow most apps to work on desktops - kind of like Apple's integration of iOS apps into MacOS. This feature is available thanks to Intel's Bridge technology.
Overall, Windows 11 feels and looks to be a refinement of what was already a great operating system - Windows 10. The new design language- paired with the ability to work well with touchscreen devices and Android apps means the OS would possibly eclipse Windows 10 adoption rates as well. Availability of the system is yet to be fully announced and preview builds will be available starting next week.
