DJI has announced their latest revolutionary product - the DJI Ronin 4D. The camera - which looks like a mid size cinema camera with a OSMO gimbal stuck on it, is basically as described - a Cinema camera with a Gimbal. The camera which has a cubical body with various controls and ports for mounting a battery - a top handle, input sources and handle grips - including a manual focus pulling grip which can be slid in from the side is basically all mostly metal while the gimbal is carbon fiber. The camera also support a wireless supported focus pulling system for lenses without AF.
The main attraction of the camera is the gimbal and the camera pod. The system, which boasts 4 axis stabilization also has the power to support lenses from DJI's DL mount - 24-35-50mm as well as a plethora of Sony E mount lenses from basic wide-angle lenses all the way to 24-70 lenses and Anamorphic lenses as well (~1kg), these lenses require you to disconnect the lens mount and swap the stock DL mount to a Sony E, and DJI even has a Leica M mount if you want to swap lenses with your Leica cameras.
As for the Camera unit, the pod basically as said before has support for a variety of wide lenses from 3 lens mount options, the pod also has built in ND filters upto 9 stops of ND and you can also go upto 14 stops of dynamic range on the 35mm full-frame sensor which also has an ISO of 200-12800 and has a max electronic shutter speed of 1/8000. The camera supports 6K currently at 48fps and there is also a 8K 60fps model in development.
Autofocus is supported by a dedicated LiDAR unit fixed above the camera pod, this allows quick AF without the need of a focusing lamp and its LiDAR has similar tracking features similar to DJI's current drone lineup and there is also a distance measurement feature and built in waveforms. This can be viewed in the fixed 5.5" 1080p display or transmitted to a external display.
DJI is also expected to list a 7" wireless transmission kit as well, the unit, which also supports the focus grips, allows a first AC to focus the lens by controlling the focus via the feed from the transmission unit. This unit also has a SD card UHS2 for scratch recording or as a backup. The camera records in Apple PRORes RAW and has 4.2.2 internal which requires you to mount DJI's special SSD storage stick, but you can also use CF express 2.0 or record externally to USB-C equipped external SSD drives. Battery on the 4D is said to be a removable TB50 cell with 4280 unit and the wireless display is said to use a NP style connector for Sony NP970 batteries.
Pricing for the 4D starts as follows - 8K model at $11499 and the 6K model at $7199. Both kits feature all above mentioned parts as a kit and is a worthy investment for sure.
