Sony has officially launched their latest iteration of the Alpha A7 - the A7 IV (Mk4), the new camera, announced as a successor to the A7III from a few years back brings many improvements such as improved autofocus,4K in 60fps, a fully articulating screen and a new sensor that comes close to the first gen A7R in terms of megapixels.
The design of the new A7/4 brings no noticeable design changes and thus it looks similar to previous sony bodies with the exception of the larger chassis found on the A7S III and the R4 series, the major differences between the models now lie in the form of a fully articulating screen which can now be moved 180 degrees unlike predecessors who were restricted to just tilt-up-down functions, the new display also has a 1,03 million dot 3" touchscreen with Sony's new menu system which grants touch access across the whole menu.The top of the camera features a new customizable wheel with a push button to lock and unlock the wheel - this spot was previously occupied by the exposure compensation, but not you can assign it to any menu - same as the secondary wheel and the front wheel above the grip. The record button also has been moved to the top and you get 3.6m dot EVF which is an improvement over its predecessor and it does support 120hz refresh rate.
The new sensor on the A7/4 is a full frame - 33 megapixel unit with 5 axis IBIS stabilization and an ISO range of 100-51200 *expandable to 50-204800. The camera also has a 1/8000 shutter speed and can do 10 fps mechanically with a buffer of 828 frames in RAW and unlimited JPG provided compatible memory cards are included. The camera shoots 4K video at 60 fps UHD (4.2.2 10bit) and 120 fps in full HD and has no record limit. The sensor also comes with 729 PDAF (Phase Detection) points and 425 CDAF (Contract detection AF).The Autofocus has also been improved thanks to new software implementations and a new processor upgrade.Last but not least, the camera supports 2 UHS II standard SD cards with one slot capable of accomodating a C-Fast express card Type A as well.You do get USB C for on the go charging and the FZ100 battery is also capable of 5120 shots and a full size HDMI A port is available for video out.
Pricing for the camera starts at $2499 and you can reserve your copy through your preferred camera retailer but it is set to go on sale in December of this year with some estimates listing December 30th. The price is $500 more than the original A7III price but its fully worth it considering the improvements.You can also buy it with the 24-70 kit lens (f3.5-5.6) for $2699. Source - Sony
Also announced along side the A7/4 are two new speed lights - the HVL-F60RM2 and 60 continuous flashes for the HVL-F46RM. The F60 has a guide number of 60 and the F46 has 46 with the F60 covering 20-200mm and the F46 covering 24-105mm. The flashes, when paired with recommended batteries, could cycle in 1.4 seconds and fire 240 shots (and could sustain 200 shots at 1/32 power) and the smaller F46 can do 320 shots at 2 seconds (it can sustain 60 shots at the same power continuously). The flashes support P-TTL for automatic flash/camera sync through Sony's hotshoe and both can control a flash group of 15 flashes as they pack internal transmitters. Pricing starts at $550 and $400 respectively.
