DJI has officially announced their latest drone - the DJI Mavic Air

The  Mavic Air  is DJI's latest mid range drone to fill in the gap between the DJI Mavic and the DJI Spark announced earlier last year . The new drone , designed as a hybrid with the design aesthetics of the Spark and the foldable propellor arms of the Mavic ,gives novice drone pilots a more affordable option that shoots stabilized 4K video for a price thats only a few hundred dollars more than the entry level Spark (which shoots only 1080p) . The Mavic Air ,designed to house a more cleverly designed gimbal system derived from the Mavic , shoots 4K at 30fps ,2.7K at 60fps and 1080p @120 fps . The stills capability of the 1/2.3” CMOS sensor is 12 megapixels and shoots from ISO 100 to 3200 (boosted from 1600 natively), this , combined with the 3 axis gimbal and smart capture technology , allows the Mavic Air to work well with both professional and novice drone users alike . The new controller , designed to support any type of smartphone , allows the drone to be cont...

Spark! - Dji's smallest and cheapest drone yet .

Dji has anounced a new follow-up to its successful already portable Mavic drone . The new Dji Spark , priced at $499 is Dji's most affordable yet . Designed to run mostly on gestures , the new Spark uses 3D mapping for obstacle detection as well as predict the gestures when it is activated . The Spark , which can read commands such as hover , circle , follow and snap a picture by making a frame using both hands , the drone also has the ability to work from a dedicated controller tethered to your smartphone or just the phone if need be . Livestreaming/FPS on the drone is also present in VR mode with Dji Googles  . Internally , the drone follows a design similar to the Mavic , but only smaller , kind of similar to a racing drone , the drone can hover 30m and can detect obstacles 5m away . This is achieved via a array of sensors which 3D map the surroundings as well as find its way around thanks to dual band GPS and GLONASS positioning systems . The drone also has Dji...

DJI grabs a chunk in Hasselblad

DJI has reportedly acquired a majority stake of Hasselblad -a veteran camera manufacturer from Sweden . The new partnership , which will bring Hasselblad camera tech to DJI's Drone and Gyro cameras will surely help the company dominate the almost uncontested drone space for time to come .DJI however has not released full details of the acquisition yet , but Luminous Landscape reports that the company has taken most of the medium  format camera company as they already had some shares in them previously  . The fate of Hasselblad as a company is not known ,but due to the brand value , DJI will probably keep them steaming forward with some Micro 4/3 systems in the future ( along with the X1D which is already going on sale) . OnePlus to launch a drone ?

OnePlus has teased the internet with a possible mention of a Drone today . The rumors , which stem from Reddit's AMA time has detailed the upcoming item as being neither a smartwatch or a tablet , but a remote drone called DR-1 (possibly Drone One ) . Although the introduction of such a device is rather odd for a one year old company , the introduction of such a product might be a signal that OnePlus might be looking to saturate the market with multiple products rather than just sticking to traditional smartphones . The mystery drone is expected to be unveiled next month (April- hopefully not on the first  )  We've been playing with our new drone and shot this photo of our building at night. Colt SWORD weapons package features Android smartphones , fast data connections and remote drones

PHOTO     Nick Leghorn/Thetruthaboutguns The Colt SWORD (Sniper Weapon& Observer Reconnaissance Devices) Technology Demonstrator connects a variety of COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) and MOTS (Military Off-The-Shelf) components together into a deployable package. The system is hard to describe in a single sentence. Colt describe it as “a Small Arms Fire Control System based upon Colt Canada’s Patented Small Arms Network Power Data System”. It is probably best described as a local area wireless network of sensors, communications, power systems and video feeds that can receive and transmit data to/from a wider area military or government networks if required. The heart of the system is a 3G wireless base station. The base station is a fully integrated battery powered system that can be connected to external systems via. satellite modems if required. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the base station, just imagine a green rectangular box about 12″x12″x4″ with tw...

Domino's new drone policy

Flying your way soon* is the AeroSight-carried pizza of your choice, courtesy of Domino’s and the conceptual creators at the group T + Biscuits. Working with Domino’s directly – for real, that is – as well as the UK-based drone group Big Communications, T + Biscuits have created the flying pizza. This machine is known as the DomiCopter and though it won’t be hitting the side of your house this week, it might be out there eventually. What you’re seeing – and I can’t be clear enough about this – is a test run for a future product: that is, not something that’s out there now. This pizza-delivering drone is indeed real, but the folks at Domino’s don’t have a fleet of them sitting in a warehouse somewhere. At least, not officially, not that we know of. But imagine if there were. Would you be OK with getting a pizza delivered by an automatically-flown machine such as this? Domino’s doesnt test a thing like this just for a marketing stunt (jokes, of course they would – and as you can see ...

Nokia Lumia 928 flies through a picturesque scenery

Another day, another string to the Nokia Lumia 928‘s bow, and the slow Finnish drip of information ahead of the new Windows Phone’s release now turns to the optical image stabilization (OIS) on the 8.7-megapixel camera. Anti-shake during still photo framing and video recording is one of the features most praise on the Lumia 920, and so it’s no surprise that Nokia is taking it seriously on the Lumia 928, strapping the new smartphone to a remote control helicopter to show how it can smooth out footage. Nokia took the Lumia 928 to Squamish valley in British Columbia, and set to work zooming the phone around the scenery. “We attached the Lumia to a remote control helicopter and filmed as many remote, scenic and inaccessible locations as we could in one amazing day of good weather” Nokia explains of the project. Whereas many smartphones use digital image stabilization techniques to try to smooth out judder and shake in video recording, there’s no replacement for physically controllin...

Eric Schmidt asks for a regulation on civilian drones to protect your privacy - Pot calls kettle black?

Google may be one of the world's largest collectors of information, but Eric Schmidt thinks people would be uncomfortable with drone surveillance by their neighbors — and that this discomfort will spur tighter regulation. In an interview with The Guardian (available for subscribers only), Schmidt predicts that private drone operation will become a bigger issue in the coming years, for both weaponized and non-weaponized models. "If you look at the miniaturisation of drones, there will be restrictions on them," he says. "I'm not going to pass judgment on whether armies should exist, but I would prefer to not spread and democratise the ability to fight war to every single human being." Schmidt gave a potential future scenario. "You're having a dispute with your neighbour. How would you feel if your neighbour went over and bought a commercial observation drone that they can launch from their back yard. It just flies over your house all day. How wou...
