HTC to make next Nexus tablet - 8.9" 2K resolution display ,new chipset and a $299 price .

Over the last two years , Google appointed ASUS to make the Nexus 7 tablet , The Google tablet was priced cheaper than its competition and it had no direct competition when it was launched .The first gen was a instant hit and it propelled Android into the limelight of the average consumer , who now for the first time saw that Nexus devices weren't only designed for nerds . The Nexus 7 launch also brought immediate competition -first from fellow Android makers and then from rivals like Apple ,Microsoft and Amazon. Last year , Google announced the 2013 Nexus 7 , unlike its first gen brother , this had essentials such as a camera etc , but it didn't become popular as the first one because the competition for the tablet world was very fierce when the device was actually launched . And with the rise of the "Phablet" - which is basically a oversize phone for people who keep their phone inside a bag , made the 7" display size a little too small for the future , a...

Samsung and Corning agree on a joint venture , Samsung's smartphones to use Gorilla-Glass until 2023

One ways the mobile device and LCD manufacturers can save money is by aggressively controlling the cost of the materials used in the construction of their products. One very common product used in the construction of all sorts of displays in mobile devices is Gorilla Glass from Corning. A deal has reportedly taken place between one of Samsung’s divisions and Corning that sees Samsung gain 7.4% of Corning Corning has reportedly taken control of Samsung Corning Precision Materials Co. Ltd., which was a joint venture between Corning and Samsung where Samsung owned 43%. Corning took full control of the joint venture by giving Samsung about $1.9 billion worth of preferred shares in Corning. If those preferred shares worth converted, Samsung would own about 7.4% of Corning. Samsung and Corning have also signed a long-term supply agreement that will see Samsung Display continue to use Corning products through 2023. Several high-end smartphone makers in the industry use Corning Gorilla G...

Apple iPad Mini 2 packs the full Retina display , 64Bit A7 processor as well (UPDATED)

This morning Apple has officially brought on a 2nd generation of their popular iPad mini tablet, complete with Retina display. This version of the iPad mini works with a body and presentation extremely similar to the original, working with a physical appearance not all that unlike the iPad mini’s first edition. This iPad mini will be hitting the market with at least two different colorways – a darker gray and a lighter silver / white, and will be appearing aside the new 5th generation iPad – the iPad Air as well . The influence of the hardware in the original iPad mini has clearly made its mark given the appearance of the iPad Air, and here in the changes to this 2nd generation mini itself, the solid nature of the first generation again remains apparent. The big changes, instead, appear on the inside. This begins with a brand new processor chip – the Apple A7 chip, aka the same as delivered with the iPad Air and the iPhone 5s. With a new gush of power in this chip, the 2nd ge...

Nvidia G-Sync module kills gaming monitor tearing

via- Engadget NVIDIA has revealed G-Sync, a new module for gaming monitors that, when used with a GeForce GPU, helps avoid tearing and skipping. The new hardware, shown off by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang at the company’s Editor’s Day in Montreal, works around the limitations of V-Sync, the system by which monitors currently deal with changing refresh rates, by setting up a path of direct communication between display and graphics card and synchronizing the refresh rate of both together. As gamers know, frame rates during play can change considerably, and that can leave monitors looking blurry or tearing. V-Sync currently works by effectively locking the graphics card to a single refresh rate depending on the capabilities of the display itself: so, if the display is running at 30Hz, and the frame rate is 30fps, then the GPU won’t push any new data to the panel until it knows it has cleared the old cycle. This, though, can lead to judder or input lag, and also means gaming monitor...

Vivo to produce a 2K resolution smartphone (2560x1440 pixels)

While we're still far from getting 4K displays on smartphones, but the latest news from Asia indicates that Chinese manufacturer Vivo is in production of a display set to feature 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. Vivo teased its upcoming product today, hailing it as the first 2K smartphone, but wasn't courteous enough to reveal the exact diagonal of the display, or provide anything more than the graphic below. There's some speculation that the panel in question could be the 5.5-inch prototype demoed by LG at the start of the year. That one boasted a pixel density of 534 pixels per inch so it should be the new leader in what has become a ppi arms race amongst smartphone manufacturers. Other rumored specs of the XPlay35 include a Snapdragon 800 chipset and 4G TDD/FDD LTE support across the big three Chinese carriers. While a 2460 x 1440 display may seem like overkill, the same was said when a 5-inch 1080p display debuted on the HTC Butterfly at the start of the year. Now, al...

LG demos its new 6" flexible OLED display pannel

If you've always wanted a phone with a big, curved screen, LG wants to grant your wish. To that end the company is now mass-producing flexible OLED screen panels, presumably for an upcoming device or class of devices. The screen itself (not the phone or tablet that it's going into) will be 6 inches diagonally, .44mm thin, and just 7.2 grams. To achieve this feat of bendy engineering, LG swapped out a glass panel for flexible plastic, which allows for a concave radius of 700mm (a pretty extreme curve, even compared to the curved glass panels on the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus) and an "unbreakable" build. How this will affect device design isn't clear: you'll still need to use conventional PCB boards, batteries, cameras, et cetera. Eventually LG will probably provide flexible panels for other manufacturers, as they do now with LCD screens. Rumors have been flying about new phones from both LG and Samsung that will integrate flexible screens of some kind. Since t...

Alleged Galaxy Note 3 front panel compared against its predecessor

The latest leaked images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 show off what is allegedly the front panel of the devices. While no measurements were provided alongside the images, according to previous leaks the device is set to feature a 5.7-inch diagonal - up from the 5.5" on the Note II. After many different values for the screen diagonal of the Note III, the rumor mill seems to have settled on 5.7". That would make for another 0.2" jump, after the original Note had a 5.3" screen, and its sequel had a 5.5" display. Note that the image is a composite of two separate shots that have been scaled to match the alleged 5.7" diagonal of the Note III. More interesting is that the bezels are thinner (they measure just 2.2mm) and the whole panel is barely bigger. Depending on how the sides of the phone are made, the Note III can be as little as 1mm taller and wider than the Note II. Not seen in this photo, but the new panel is reportedly thinner too....

Acer Iconia W3 to get updated display due to poor quality of current pannel

Acer reportedly plans to replace the first-gen Iconia W3, the first 8.1-inch Windows 8 tablet, with an updated version that could address screen complaints, potentially arriving as soon as September this year. The new model is expected to hit stores by the end of this quarter, Acer Netherlands spokesperson Star Swank told Tweakers, and be thinner and lighter than the current Iconia W3. Although Acer didn’t confirm it, the most important change is believed to be in the screen technology. The current Iconia W3 uses a TN-LCD panel which, supports only limited viewing angles, meaning as soon as you start to use the tablet off-center the image quality plummets. On the updated model, however, there’s a switch to IPS instead, which would deliver considerably greater viewing angles. It’s the same display technology as Apple uses on the iPad and Samsung uses on the Nexus 10, both of which have been praised for their screen quality. Acer wouldn’t confirm the IPS switch, but according to ...

6" 2560x1600 displays will be the next step for Android Smartphone displays

The global mobile market is expected to be ushered into a 500 ppi (pixels per inch) era next year. The display industry, which sported 5-inch full-HD displays this year, is expected to bring about another innovation in picture quality. According to industry insiders, Korean and Japanese display makers are currently working on the development of LTPS (Low Temperature Poly Silicon), WQXGA (2560x1600) mobile LCD panels. This year, 5-inch full-HD displays with 440ppi have been the best specs. Next year, 6-inch, WQXGA 500ppi displays are likely to be released. LG Display has opted for AH-IPS (Advanced high performance-In plane switching) so as to manufacture panels with over 500 ppi. Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp are also taking pains to develop 500 ppi mobile displays, an improvement on full-HD displays, as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are contemplating the adoption of Japanese panels in order to diversify their supply lines. The industry which evolved from 720p display...

Details of 2 rumored Full HD Sony smartphones released

A new report indicates that Sony could launch two new flagship devices in the second half of the year, with the devices currently known as the Togari and Honami. Naturally, this is just a rumor for now, so, as always in such cases, take everything that follows with a grain of salt. The Togari is said to sport a Full HD (1920 x 1080 resolution) 6.44-inch display and offer a design similar to the already launched Xperia Z. The handset (phablet if you will) would come with a very slim profile like the Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z products and will feature a back made from glass. The Togari would be available “at least” in white, and could ship as early as July in Sony’s home country, or right in time to take on the Galaxy Note 3. Or better said, right in time to beat the Galaxy Note 3 to market by a few months, Samsung’s upcoming high-end player in the big smartphone business – of course, assuming that this new rumor is accurate. Coincidentally, the Xperia Z was launched well ahe...
