Microsoft puts Nokia X platform and Asha series to rest , company to lay off 18000 employees as well

Nokia/Microsoft has decided to send the Nokia X and its entire family of AOSP (Android) as well as the S40 based Asha feature phones  to the axe .This move comes right next to the biggest layoff of Microsoft's employee force with 18,000 employees scheduled to be sent home  . First off , we have the over hyped Nokia X line of Android devices . The Nokia X platform ,developed by Microsoft/Nokia was built on top of  AOSP(Android open source platform)  and this meant that Google services such as the App store , maps , mail and apps like Youtube were replaced by ones made by Microsoft (which didn't work well). The Nokia X lineup was largely ill equipped and underpowered to the meet the demands of the power hungry smartphone consumers , who expected a lot from a Nokia running Android , and this armed with the lack of a dedicated home and menu button ,camera flash , front camera and a imitation -windows phone feel gave people a reason to turn away from the devi...

Is Nokia/Microsoft working on a Android power Lumia ?

Big news: Android-powered Lumia incoming, from Nokia by Microsoft - http://t.co/KKLstDDVVO — @evleaks (@evleaks) July 7, 2014 Nokia has been gaining some ground with their Lumia lineup of smartphones over the past few years , their initial attempts at launching Windows Phone devices fell down to the floor as they failed to anticipate the popularity of Android .Now after Microsoft's acquisition , The company is fully committed to Microsoft , but that does not mean that Nokia is attached  to Windows Phone only , a recent rumor  tells us that Nokia , with Microsoft's blessing , is working on a "Lumia" Branded AOSP Android device , which , unlike the Budget oriented  AOSP Nokia X platform is said to feature high'er end specs . This news comes from a somewhat reliable source called evleaks , as you already know , the Nokia X platform is a Microsoft edited version of Android ,the skinning process replaces Google services with that of Microsoft  , and the only way ...

Nokia says bye bye to the Nokia X ,X+ and XL , no update to software version 2.0

The Nokia X series of smartphones are only 2 months old , but that didn't Stop Microsoft (Nokia's new Owner) from launching the Nokia X2 , which is the technical replacement for the Nokia X , X+ and XL smartphones . The Nokia X2 features better hardware in the form of More RAM(1GB LPDDR3) and a newer Snapdragon 200 chipset which is based on the Cortex A7 series of processors rather than the Snapdragon s4 play processors using the Cortex A5 design in the Nokia X lineup and a home key and a Multi functional back key . The Nokia X2 is also based on the Nokia X platform 2.0 ,which uses Android API 18 which is basically Android 4.3 Jellybean , the Older versions (Nokia X,Nokia X+ and Android XL are based on Nokia X platform 1.0 based on Android 4.2) and are no longer compatible for the Nokia X platform 2.0 update , so basically , the Nokia X ,X+ and XL are now considered obsolete ,which is a shame considering that they have had such a short lifetime .   Written by Rakitha f...

Nokia X2 - Microsoft's Android #2

The Nokia X was not well received by the tech community , its lack of a home and menu button , rear flash , and a front facing camera and its lack of ram made it a dead on arrival device  . Nokia's new owner ,Microsoft quickly replaced the two month old Nokia X range with the Nokia X2 bringing some new specs and a still affordable price . The Nokia X2 at first glance ,looks a lot like the Lumia 620 with its left bezel Nokia logo . the phone also has a new design with a transparent glass like coating surrounding  the plastic case making it feel like a holographic key tag .The phone now comes in a orange barley color and Nokia's signature Android green and Black (other colors will come later) . The back cover is still removable which gives you access to the MicroSD card , Sim slots and a 1800 mAh removable battery . This is perfectly enough to power the 4.3" IPS LCD which has a resolution of 480x800 and Clearblack technology .The Phone still has a windows phone inspired...

Android powered Nokia X2 features some minor upgrades , to be based on 4.3 jellybean

For once , we all thought that the Android powered Nokia X platform was going to be scrapped in the future , but as it turns out , Nokia's new owners have decided to keep the platform running by introducing the X2 range in another 6 months time. As you may know , the Nokia X2 codename has been used by Nokia previously on a featurephone called the X2-00, so don't get confused . The Android powered Nokia X2 's specs were leaked in Antutu benchmark which clearly shows some new additions to the budget device including a faster Snapdragon 200 dual core processor , 1GB of RAM and a VGA front facing camera and a 5mp rear camera which were absent in the Nokia X . The display resolution remains the same .The Nokia X 2's software is said to be based on Android 4.3 jellybean which is outdated , but unlike Android 4.4 , the update still allows Apps to be installed to the SD card which is a huge bonus considering that this device will require apps to be installed from 3rd party...

Complimentary 4GB MicroSD cards will come with every Nokia X+ and XL purchase

There was once a time when phone manufacturers gave free accessories and complimentary products with every phone purchase . Nokia usually had the habit of putting in a free SD card with every box sold , but as time progressed , the habit of gifting stopped . But now , with the launch of the Nokia X series , the free SD cards are back!. So if you were planning to buy the Nokia X+ or the XL , then you wil be greeted with a complimentary 4GB SD card inside , but sadly the lower end Nokia X will not be getting this offer .The Nokia X+ is said to be available at 99 Euros while the XL will go on sale for 109 Euros unlocked. The phone has a Dual core 1Ghz Snapdragon S4 Play processor and has 768mb ram , Micro SD storage and it has a much bigger 2000 mAh battery to keep you running ,although it is not perfect and the specifications make it look like something from 2010 , the low 109 eur...

Nokia #greenduck vines are only one day away from revealing their hidden meaning(s)

There’s just one day left until the Nokia X is shown to the world, and Nokia is letting the world know. How? With the latest in their Green Duck teaser series which has been popping up on Vine. In the newest video, we see the line of ducks all speeding down a river. Where are they headed? The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where Nokia’s first Android-powered smartphone, the X, will debut. All of our questions will be answered tomorrow, so stay tuned. Until then, enjoy the duck Vine. GSMArena

Nokia #Greenduck teaser ...day 3

Nokia continues the green duck teasing of their X Android smartphone. This time, we see a wall of cell phones barely able to hold back a flood. It’s worth noting that the X will not be a top-tier Android device: it will retail for under $115, according to the leak. The interface of the X hardly seems like Android, it looks more like a Windows Phone device, so even if Nokia is experimenting with a new mobile OS, it looks as if they are trying to keep a consistent feel for their users. Expect the full reveal to occur during Mobile World Congress, which starts on February 24th in Barcelona. As always, we’ll be providing up to-the-minute information on the event and all of its news and releases. Nokia Goes Duck again , day #2 , #GreenDuck

Part 2 of Nokia’s #GreenDuck teasers is out and the paddling of ducks hits an obstacle – a dam of discarded phones (there’s a traffic light there too, for some unknown reason). Nokia also put up a Green Duck page on its web site. The page just lists the two teaser vines but its design is more interesting – it looks just like the custom interface on the Nokia X A110 in the spy shots from earlier today. What’s with this teaser campaign anyway? First monkeys and pirate maps, then aliens and puppies and then there’s the ducks. The dam of discarded phones and constant emphasis on “green” does make us think of Nokia’s recycling efforts. GSMArena

Alleged Nokia X A110 leaks out in dual sim format , Windows Phone inspired Android layout runs the show

For a company that purposefully steered away from Android, Nokia sure is making a lot of fuss about its upcoming Android phone. The device in question, the Nokia X A110, was caught in China. It's supposed to join the Asha line and it looks the part – it has a single back button below the screen. That's because the A110 will run a customized version of Android. The UI certainly looks quite different – obviously inspired by Windows Phone's live tiles. The Store shortcut will lead to an separate app repository (not the Play Store) but so far little is known about it. Nokia will also be replacing Google's Maps with its own HERE suite and the Nokia X A110 will come with a free navigation license for one country. Nokia also has its own music service, so we'll probably be seeing that too. Anyway, this is clearly the dual-SIM version of the phone, but there will be a single-SIM option too. The price target is under CNY 700 ($115 / €85), and there should be a minimal p...

Nokia Goes all #GreenDuck on vine while teasing about the upcoming Nokia X

Nokia’s Vine account joined in on the teasing of Nokia’s upcoming Mobile World Congress event. After yesterday’s teaser images from Weibo , today’s vine isn’t all that revealing but it uses the characteristic green that has become associated with the Nokia X A110 (Normandy). Yesterday it was monkeys, today ducks. Where’s Nokia going with all the cartoony animals? The same video has been uploaded to Nokia’s YouTube account, where it’s titled Nokia #GreenDuck (Part 1), so we can expect more shorts like this. GsmArena

WSJ: Nokia will release it's first Android phone this month

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nokia will release its first Android smartphone this month. Known as Nokia Normandy, the low-cost handset will reportedly be showcased during MWC in Barcelona. According to WSJ’s sources, Nokia was hard at work on the device while Microsoft was performing due diligence prior to its acquisition of the Finnish company. The smartphone will allegedly go official as Nokia X. Unsurprisingly, the smartphone is tipped to launch without Google Play support, similarly to Amazon’s Kindle products. Instead, it will be focused on services provided by Microsoft and Nokia. In line with recent leaks, the UI of the upcoming smartphone is also said to be closely related to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8. Rumored specs of the Nokia X include dual-core Snapdragon 200 SoC, dual-SIM, 4” WVGA display, 4GB of built-in memory, and 512MB of RAM. The handset will reportedly be priced in line with Nokia Asha devices. All things considered, The Wall Street Journal report rea...
