Lenovo adds 2 new budget 8" and 10" tablets to the YOGA family

Lenovo re-thought the laptop, bringing flexible displays to a variety of different notebooks, and has now turned its focus to the tablet. The new Yoga Tablet 8 and 10 appear almost book- or magazine-inspired, like the Sony Xperia Tablet S, with a round bulge along one edge to serve as a grip. The design itself isn't completely new — the new tablets look eerily similar to the Apple Wireless Keyboard — but the extra space allows Lenovo to pack the tablets full of battery life. Both devices will supposedly last 16 to 18 hours on a single charge, which Lenovo hopes will make these tablets stand out from the competition. Both the 8-inch and 10-inch Yoga tablets feel solid and well-built, with a slightly textured backing and slim body, except for the cylindrical battery. The new shape is actually really comfortable to hold, especially the 8-inch model, which has a great grip for reading. Both tablets also have a kickstand that's a little hard to open but holds steady at any angle, ...

Samsung hopes to use MediaTek processor for budget sm

Looks like MediaTek has scored a big client. Really big. Yup, Samsung may opt to use the vendor’s chips in some of its products. According to the Chinese-language Commercial Times and brought to our attention by DigiTimes, MediaTek is expected to enter the supply chain of Samsung Electronics with its quad- and 8-core mobile processors in the second half of 2014. We’d have to guess Sammy will use MediaTek’s gear in its low-to-mid end smartphones and tablets, leaving the higher end of the market for its own Exynos processors and those made by Qualcomm. While MediaTek’s chips do rock four or eight cores, it’s important to note these are usually slower Cortex-A7 cores that may be power-efficient but can’t deliver the performance of faster Cortex-A9 and Cortex-A15 cores. MediaTek has been growing like crazy in the last few years, with many Chinese vendors opting to use these chips, rather than more expensive ones made by the likes of Qualcomm. Among the companies relying on MediaTek c...

The tablet features 3G HSPA+ connectivity with voice call support (in select countries, the US isn’t getting it). There will also be a Wi-Fi only version. The Lenovo S5000 runs Android 4.2 with Lenovo customizations and it’s powered by a Mediatek MT8389 chipset (quad-core Cortex-A7 at 1.2GHz processor and PowerVR Series5XT GPU). The 3,450mAh battery will last 8 hours of web browsing over Wi-Fi and 6 hours of watching HD videos according to Lenovo. Web browsing and video wat...
