ZTE Open will be available for $80 unlocked on ebay

In a strange move by ZTE, the company is planning to sell its latest handset in the US and UK by listing it on eBay. Of course, this wouldn’t the first time that companies have resorted to eBay for selling their products, but it’s interesting to see a mobile phone maker sell their devices directly through eBay instead of their own website. The phone is called the ZTE Open, and it will feature the Firefox OS, making it one of the first of several such devices to release in the US. The phone will be sold exclusively in orange for just $80 unlocked. And because it’s unlocked, Mozilla says that the phone won’t come with any local apps or features, meaning no bloatware! Why the aim to sell on eBay, though? Essentially, it’s all about bringing the ZTE Open to more consumers around the world, and the low price point and availability on eBay should give more customers the opportunity to purchase the new phone and use it how they see fit. The name of device really says it all. The UK pr...

Computex 2013 -Mozilla /Foxconn Firefox OS tablet

The long-rumoured Firefox OS-powered tablet has now been made official. Revealed at a Foxconn press event during Computex 2013 in Taipei, the tablet emerged sat on a desk next to a Foxconn employee. While there are absolutely no details whatsoever as to the tablet's internal specifications, its presence is definitely confirmation of Firefox's tablet plans. Irritating that we can't know more, but we have reached out to Mozilla and will be posting more the moment we know it. Foxconn just announced a partnership with Mozilla in order to help push and produce its Firefox OS powered smartphones and tablets. This just-revealed tablet could be one of the first devices that Foxconn produces. From the pictures, the tablet looks to have an 8 or 10-inch screen, but doesn't appear quite as high resolution as some of the flagship competition. This, however, is just speculation and could turn out to be quite the opposite. "Currently, Foxconn is executing on a vision ...

HTC HD2 collects another developer trophy with Mozilla's Firefox OS

In the world of smart mobile device hacking, there is one that stands out as a cult classic of sorts: the HTC HD2. This device originally ran a version of Windows Mobile that has at this point been long outdated – and since then it’s been pushed in so many directions that it’s astounding. This week’s addition to the collection of mobile operating systems this smartphone is able to run is Mozilla’s own Firefox OS. The HTC HD2 smartphone is one that remains newsworthy due to its favoritism in the developer community due to its surprisingly open ability to be hacked. For over three and a half years, this device has been a go-to smartphone for the most intrepid developers looking to prove their might in hacking, pushing everything from Windows Phone 7 to Android to this machine where it’d otherwise only be running a relatively ancient operating system. Here in the spring of 2013, the HTC HD2 has received a port of the internet-based Firefox OS. This operating system is otherwise k...

Mozilla offers free Firefox OS phones for people with great app ideas

Just a week after rolling out the latest version of its Firefox OS simulator, Mozilla has announced that it’s offering a nifty new proposition to would-be FFOS developers. If you’ve got an idea for a killer HTML5 application and the technical chops (or at least the drive) to make it a reality, Mozilla wants to give you a Firefox OS developer device. And the devices in question? None other than the seemingly popular Keon from Spanish smartphone startup Geeksphone — one of the very same devices that forced Geeksphone to limit their sales to ensure that the team would be able to stay on top of existing orders. It seems not even Mozilla has been able to secure a sizable stash of Keons, as developer evangelist Havi Hoffman points out on the Mozilla Hacks blog that the program will either run through the end of May or until Mozilla blows through its “limited supply.” Granted, the Keon isn’t the flashiest smartphone floating around — it sports a relatively pokey 1Ghz Snapdragon S1 chi...

Sony to set Xperia E on Fire...fox

Sony announced Wednesday afternoon on the Sony Mobile Developer Blog that owners of the Xperia E will get a chance to test out an experimental build of Firefox OS via a downloadable ROM. The company has also warned that the process is for advanced developers and it should not be tried by a consumer without developer skills. Keep in mind that this ROM is labeled as experimental and will by no means serve as a daily driver. This means that there is a lack of cellular data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth due to a lack of radio connectivity. Sony has also warned that the SD card might be unstable and that touch sensitivity has not been fully calibrated. If you’re still wanting to bite the bullet and take the early build of Firefox OS for a test run, be sure to head on over here where Sony has written up a helpful guide for developers wanting to flash the ROM via Sony’s flash tool, which will also allow you to easily revert back to Android. If you’re not wanting to unlock the Xperia E’s bootloa...
