Lots of new devices are being unveiled today at MWC 2014 in Spain. One of those new devices is the next generation YotaPhone. The original YotaPhone landed last December and brought with it a device with a normal display on one side and an always-on electronic paper display on the other. The idea is that the electronic paper screen will make it easy to read documents while reducing battery consumption. Yota Devices has pulled the wraps off its next generation YotaPhone that has some nice improvements over the original. The new device has full touch control for the always-on electronic paper display. The new device also promises a number of new hardware and software features. There's no doubt that Google is becoming a full-fledged hardware company, but the latest Google X project is a lot different that tablets and smartphones — the company just announced that it's building a "smart contact lens." However, it's not meant to be a miniaturized version of Glass — it's meant to help diabetes patients keep track of their glucose levels. Inside the lens is a miniaturized wireless chip and glucose monitor that will measure the glucose levels of the wearer's tears. Google's hoping that it'll be a less painful and invasive way to monitor glucose levels than the typical method of pricking a finger and testing blood droplets multiple times a day. The guys behind Phonebloks think there are a few major problems with smartphones as they are made right now. First, they break and get thrown out, which causes a lot of trash buildup in the world. Second, they aren't easily reparable. And lastly, they aren't easily upgradable. Of course, the guys over at Phonebloks think that they have designed a solution to all of these problems, and they need your support. The idea is to create a smartphone that is completely modular, so each component - display, CPU/GPU, battery, storage, camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc - are all separated into discrete blocks that all attach to a main board and are secured by just a couple of screws. This design would allow for easy repairs, because you could simply replace the broken component instead of replacing the entire device, and it would offer tons of customization. Renders for a Nexus concept phone imagined by a designer have hit the web amidst increased speculation on future smartphones such as the Google X Phone or the LG Nexus 5 that would run stock Android. Some cities in the US and Europe have problems with brownouts and blackouts caused by increasing power demands at certain times of the year. In some cities in the US, power companies have resorted to rolling blackouts to ensure that everyone has access to power during times of peak demand, such as hot summer days. In the UK, the National Grid is considering implementing a requirement that would have sensor chips placed inside certain white goods. These white goods would be things such as freezers, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, and electric ovens. What officials in the UK want to be able to do is remotely turn off these sensor equipped smart appliances during times of peak demand to reduce the load on the electrical grid.
