Microsoft puts Nokia X platform and Asha series to rest , company to lay off 18000 employees as well

Nokia/Microsoft has decided to send the Nokia X and its entire family of AOSP (Android) as well as the S40 based Asha feature phones  to the axe .This move comes right next to the biggest layoff of Microsoft's employee force with 18,000 employees scheduled to be sent home  . First off , we have the over hyped Nokia X line of Android devices . The Nokia X platform ,developed by Microsoft/Nokia was built on top of  AOSP(Android open source platform)  and this meant that Google services such as the App store , maps , mail and apps like Youtube were replaced by ones made by Microsoft (which didn't work well). The Nokia X lineup was largely ill equipped and underpowered to the meet the demands of the power hungry smartphone consumers , who expected a lot from a Nokia running Android , and this armed with the lack of a dedicated home and menu button ,camera flash , front camera and a imitation -windows phone feel gave people a reason to turn away from the devi...

MWC 2014 - Nokia Conversations / ASHA 230

Related - Nokia X and X+ Nokia XL Nokia 220 Nokia keeps hacking away at the so-called next billion mobile users, and now the Finnish company wants to get them hooked up to the cloud with the new Asha 230 and Nokia 220. Fresh to MWC 2014, the Asha 230 brings features familiar from the existing Asha touchscreen line to an even lower point of entry, price-wise, while the Nokia 220 has a more traditional form-factor but is also the company's cheapest ever device to include cellular data. The Asha 230 (and its dual-SIM version) are billed as "My First Asha", a €45 ($62) pre-tax and pre-subsidy stepping stone into Nokia's touchscreen range that goes on sale from today. It has all the apps of the Asha 500-series devices, but tops out at 2G data (i.e. GPRS) and lacks WiFi. Still, you get quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and Bluetooth 3.0, a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, microUSB port, and a 1.3-megapixel camera. Nokia also preloads Facebook, Twitter, LINE, WhatsA...

WSJ: Nokia will release it's first Android phone this month

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nokia will release its first Android smartphone this month. Known as Nokia Normandy, the low-cost handset will reportedly be showcased during MWC in Barcelona. According to WSJ’s sources, Nokia was hard at work on the device while Microsoft was performing due diligence prior to its acquisition of the Finnish company. The smartphone will allegedly go official as Nokia X. Unsurprisingly, the smartphone is tipped to launch without Google Play support, similarly to Amazon’s Kindle products. Instead, it will be focused on services provided by Microsoft and Nokia. In line with recent leaks, the UI of the upcoming smartphone is also said to be closely related to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8. Rumored specs of the Nokia X include dual-core Snapdragon 200 SoC, dual-SIM, 4” WVGA display, 4GB of built-in memory, and 512MB of RAM. The handset will reportedly be priced in line with Nokia Asha devices. All things considered, The Wall Street Journal report rea...

Nokia's first Android Phone - aka Nokia Normandy/Nokia X to feature low specs , low price tag

The Nokia X, a.k.a. Nokia Normandy, has been talked about for some time now. The latest information regarding Nokia's first ever Android smartphone comes again from evleaks, who has provided some of the key specs of the device. One of the leaked specifications is a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Exact SoC is unknown but previous reports had suggested the Snapdragon 200 8225Q, although that is a quad-core chip. The phone will also have 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage memory. Other specs include a 4.0-inch, WVGA (800 x 480) display, 5 megapixel camera, dual-SIM support and a 1,500mAh battery. If there was ever doubt that this is going to be a low-end device, this should take care of it. The Nokia X will have Nokia's own application store on board, just like Amazon has on its Kindle Fire devices but you will also be able to install third party apps by sideloading them. The phone will allegedly be available in six colors. GSMArena

Nokia Asha 500,502,503 unveiled (UPDATED)

Asha 503 Nokia has revealed a trio of new Asha handsets, the Asha 500, 502, and 503, pushing its affordable smartphone range with an unusual “trapped in ice” aesthetic. The three phones join the original Asha 501, announced earlier this year, in offering a MeeGo-esque interface and budget features, with all three expected to come in at under $100 pre-subsidies. Nokia went for a bold, blocky color scheme for the original Asha, and the three new models step that up a notch, encasing the bright shells in transparent plastic. The Asha 500 is the cheapest, with a 2.8-inch display and a mere 2-megapixel camera. It will come in a choice of single or dual-SIM versions, with the latter getting easy switching between the two accounts, and like all three of the new Asha devices be available in red, free, yellow, cyan, white, or black. Stepping up, the Asha 502 has a slightly larger, 3-inch display, along with a 5-megapixel camera, this time paired with an LED flash. It will have dual-SIM...

Nokia Asha 502 gets @evleaked

A week after the Nokia Asha 500 emerged, another member of the Finnish manufacturer also made an unscheduled appearance. The Nokia Asha 502 leaked out in a press image, showcasing is attractively designed body in six different colors. Unsurprisingly, the Nokia Asha 502 looks a lot like the Asha 500. The 502 however sports a camera with an LED flash. The Nokia Asha 500 has to do without one. There’s no word on the specs of the Nokia Asha 502. Dual-SIM functionality and Wi-Fi are unsurprisingly present. The Nokia Asha software platform which we experienced in our Asha 501 review also appears to have been refreshed. The Nokia Asha 502 is expected to break cover next month, on October 22 at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. The event will be quite interesting, as Nokia is expected to unveil six new devices, including a Lumia phablet and Windows RT tablet.(GSMArena)

Evleaks tweets about two upcoming Nokia Asha featurephones - Nokia Asha 502 (Pegasus/Lanai) and Asha 503 (Doubleshot)

Once again evleaks brings us some juicy information on phones that are yet to become official. This time it's about two upcoming Asha handsets previously rumored as Pegasus and Lanai. Nokia Pegasus / Nokia Lanai = Asha 502 / Asha 503 (doubleshot) — @evleaks (@evleaks) August 28, 2013 Nokia Lanai will be called Asha 503 and we've already seen it leaking in February in four pictures. It will look much like the firstborn of the refreshed Asha lineup - the Asha 501. However, the Nokia Asha 503 will replace the hardware Back key with a capacitive one and will have its entire front will be covered by a curved glass. You can also spot the 5MP rear camera with a LED flash. Naturally, the Asha 503 will get a dual-SIM version. Nokia Pegasus is bound to go official as Nokia Asha 502, but we know nothing besides the name for that one. The Asha 502 should slide between the Asha 501 and the Asha 503 in the pecking order. Nokia Asha 501 will not be coming to North America

Nokia Asha 501  Nokia will not launch its new Asha Touch range of affordable smartphones, such as the Asha 501 revealed earlier today, in the US or Canada, the company has confirmed, focusing North American sales solely on Windows Phone. The Asha 501 – which will cost $99 pre-tax and subsidies when it hits stores from June – will be the first of a line of handsets running the new Asha platform, which is built on Nokia’s good old S40 O/s , however, those in the US with an eye on a cheap smartphone won’t get the chance. Nokia confirmed the sales decision, which not only affects the single- and dual-SIM variants of today’s Asha 501, but future Asha touch models, speaking to SlashGear in advance of the launch in India today. The phone has already been confirmed for Latin America, India, and Africa from June, with European availability – including the UK – from Q3 2013. For the US and Canada, however, Nokia will be sticking with its focus on the Lumia range of Windows Phones....

Nokia Asha 501 is official - 3" featurephone for $99

Stephen Elop just announced the new Nokia Asha 501 on the stage of the Nokia press in India. It’s the first product of the new generation Ashas with a brand new platform. The design is inspired by Lumia and Nokia picked red as the signature color. The new Asha platform is based on the Smarter Phone acquisition Nokia made a few years ago. The new interface focuses on swipe events and a new feature called Fastlane. The Nokia Asha 501 is made of only two parts to make it more durable. The back is removable to access the microSIM, the pre-installed 4GB microSD card (up to 32GB supported) and the battery. The phone packs a 3" QVGA capacitive touchscreen on the front (133ppi), it supports two finger multitouch. On the back, there's 3.2MP fixed-focus camera . The new Asha platform is a grandchild of the MeeGo OS. The phone wakes up with a double tap. It features two home screens - one is Fastlane, the other one is the app drawer. Fastlane promises to show your present and...

Nokia might unveil the Asha 501 tomorrow

Nokia will be announcing a new phone tomorrow and the Conversations blog posted a teaser that shows nothing but a single rounded button. Popular leak source @evleaks may have just allowed us to take a better look at tomorrow's new device (as always, take it with a pinch of salt). the stack of phones look identical to the pictures leaked a few months ago  It's called Nokia Asha 501 and it is a full-touch device. Interestingly, there's only one physical button under the screen (presumably the one from the teaser image), while current touch Ashas have two – the green and red receiver keys. There's no hardware "home" button since the UI uses the touchscreen for the extra controls needed. Now, it's entirely possible that the receiver keys are capacitive, but this could also mean a redesign in the S40 touch interface. Also, 501 is the highest model number in the Asha line until now, so this could be its flagship. Tune back in tomorrow for official deta...

Nokia Asha 210

The Nokia Asha 210 has just gone official and it is the QWERTY phone Nokia teased two days ago. Just as we thought, it is not a Windows Phone Lumia device, but instead is an affordable Asha phone standing out with colorful design, single and dual-SIM versions and a dedicated WhatsApp button. The Asha 210 is clearly shooting for heavy texters, especially those who use WhatsApp as the service is integrated deep even in the contact book. It also has the Nokia Slam feature for sharing images and videos via Bluetooth without having to pair first. "The Nokia Asha 210 really stands out giving super-social consumers new ways to express their personalities through design, colour and innovations like the world's first WhatsApp button," Nokia Mobile Phones executive VP Timo Toikkanen said. "It has been designed to allow people to easily update their social networks, stay in touch with friends and share user created content." The device is also comes with Facebook ...

Nokia's Wednesday event might feature a new QWERTY phone

Nokia is making an announcement for one or more new mobile phones on the 24th of April, according to a company blog post. The timing of the announcement, set at 7am Greenwich Mean Time, suggests it will be for a device destined for release primarily in Europe and Asia, with the accompanying image giving a few clues as to what it could be for. The image appears to show a pronounced curved corner that isn't typically associated with Lumia devices, a point compounded by the post telling of a Q&A session with Neil Broadley from the Mobile Phones team, rather than someone working just on the Lumia range. Part of a keyboard is visible, showing an arrow and what appears to be the letter Z. This has been shown before in earlier Asha devices, including the Asha 302. A new feature-phone with QWERTY keyboard may help the phone producer rebound from its small first-quarter loss. In the quarter, it managed to sell 61.9 million devices, 5.6 million were Lumias, and 400,000 were sold t...
