LG's Liger gets benchmarked , and leaked ahead of launch

LG has been working on their own processor for some time , the company , which anounced their plans of making a processor called "Odin" are now said to launch it inside LG's latest phablet called the LG F490L Liger . The Chipset , which is said to use Arm's Big Little design architecture , employs 4 Cortex A15 cores and 4 A7 cores for low power usage , according to preliminary benchmarks the chipset is not really "that impressive" and it sits well below the current crop of high end smartphones .But ,considering that the Liger only has a 1080p resolution on its 5.9" display, a 3000mAh battery and a 13mp rear camera without LG's flashy Laser autoficus  its probably not designed to be a killer smartphone after all ,and even if the benchmarks are low , its still a worthy adversary for all mid range devices once it launches soon . CES 2014 - Nvidia Tegra K1 packs 192 CUDA cores , Kepler SMX GPU , and comes in Quad A15 and Dual -64 bit Denver core versions

Related articles CROP CIRCLES unreal engine 4 At its CES press conference, NVIDIA finally revealed the marketing name for Project Logan - NVIDIA's latest mobile SoC: Tegra K1. NVIDIA hasn't said much about the architectural details about its latest Tegra SoC, other than to confirm that it features 192 CUDA cores. Since we already know Tegra K1 is based on NVIDIA's Kepler GPU architecture, and a single Kepler SMX features 192 CUDA cores, we know that K1 uses a single Kepler SMX. With K1, NVIDIA ditches the GeForce ULP GPU core that was present in the previous four generations of Tegra and moves mobile onto the same roadmap as the desktop/notebook GeForce. NVIDIA used the slide below that seems to imply convergence between the Tegra and GeForce architectures going forward, even beyond Kepler. Tegra K1 will be available in quad-core Cortex A15 (+1 shadow Cortex A15 core) and dual-core Denver (64-bit ARMv8) versions. The Cortex A15 version will be avaduilable in 1H...

Intel unveils new Merrifield Soc and a new LTE chip for Bay Tail

Intel has shown off its new chips for tablets, smartphones, and LTE-enabled devices, with Silvermont, Bay Trail-T, and Merrifield all revealed at Computex 2013 today. Merrifield, due to show up in Intel-powered smartphones from early 2014, is the company’s next-gen smartphone platform, a 22nm Atom SoC that was, for today’s show, wrapped up in a new touchscreen reference design Intel was coy on specific details about the phone, and indeed about Merrifield, though did let slip a couple of elements the new Atom chip will bring. Unsurprisingly there’s talk of both more performance and more battery life; however, there’s also apparently an “integrated sensor hub” that will be used for “personalized services.” Intel hasn’t said exactly what those services might be – nor, indeed, what types of sensors will be included – but it does remind us of Motorola’s comments last week about the incoming Moto X, and how the company was looking to contextual understanding for its new range of phones...

Computex 2013 - Arm unveils new Cortex A12 processor for mid range devices

CHIP DESIGNER ARM has announced its Cortex A12 processor for midrange devices. ARM's Cortex A15 has been getting all the plaudits as the first chip to support the chip designer's Big Little architecture and has already found its way into the Nexus 10 tablet and some versions of Samsung's Galaxy S4 handset. Now ARM has announced the Cortex A9 for the mainstream market that it pitches as a replacement for its hugely popular Cortex A9 chip. ARM also took the opportunity to announce a new Mali GPU that it hopes will be paired with the Cortex A12 and its other graphics chip, the Mali T622. While the firm pitches the Cortex A12 at the lucrative midrange device market, the Mali T622 has full OpenCL 1.1 and OpenGL ES 3.0 support with the firm touting 50 percent energy efficiency improvements over previous generation Mali T600 series GPUs. However ARM's Cortex A12 addresses the business end of the mobile market, with ARM claiming it is a completely new design based on the...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Exynos vs Qualcomm processor debate - who gets what ?

One of the most debated Samsung Galaxy S4 stories preceding the official unveiling was the one related to the processor or processors powering the “next big thing”. Some sources told us the S4 was going to come in a single Exynos 5 Octa-based version, others that there will be a Snapdragon 600 model too, while a few even said the Snapdragon variant was going to be the only one. And then Sammy made the 5-incher official, but for some reason decided to keep part of the mystery going. Two GS4 versions were announced, but nothing about the splitting of the world was mentioned, so we were left guessing. Naturally, we thought Sammy would be employing the same strategy used on the S3, meaning North America was to get the Snapdragon GS4, while the rest of the world was in for the Exynos treat. It would have made perfect sense, only it won’t happen that way. Instead, most likely to make sure there won’t be any supply shortages, Samsung will be launching the Qualcomm version in many cou...

GTC 2013 - Nvidia Tegra 5 "Logan"

This week NVIDIA’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang spoke up at their GPU Technology Conference on the future of the mobile processor known as Tegra and has teased what will likely be called “Tegra 5″. Running through what we’d already learned about the Tegra 2, Tegra 3, and the upcoming Tegra 4, Huang let us know that the next code-name “Logan” would be breaking boundaries once again. The next Tegra processor will, according to Huang, do “everything a modern computer should do. Speaking on how they created the idea of a single energy-saving core – seen first in the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor – with 4-PLUS-1 technology, sleeping with this one sleeper core for low-powered tasks. Huang spoke also of the first software-defined radio – Deep Execution Processor – and the Computational Camera using both the CPU and the GPU with the sensors of the mobile camera – introduced on the Tegra 4. Inside Logan we’ll be seeing CUDA 5 and Kepler. This is the first time we’ve seen a mobile processor inc...

ST Ericsson closes down

The mobile chip company ST-Ericsson, which was a joint venture between STMicroelectronics  and Ericsson, is to close. The troubled mobile technology company has never made a profit, since it was created in 2008, and finally the two parent companies have said enough is enough. The closure isn’t coming as a complete surprise and ends several months of speculation about the company. Its troubles seem to reflect the general changes in the mobile industry with the company losing big orders from Nokia, which is fighting a battle for market share with Apple and Samsung. Even though it was a fabless based business, meaning the actual manufacturing was outsourced, the European based company has found it difficult to compete with more agile chip makers in Asia. This was compounded by the rising trend among mobile makers to make their own chips, something that Apple and Samsung do. STMicro has said it will keep making products for ST-Ericsson customers as long as they needed them and...

Apple might hire Intel to make A7 chipsets

Foundry service providers Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung Electronics are reportedly competing for Apple's A7 processor orders. Rumors regarding the possibility of Intel obtaining the orders have also spread. According to institutional investors, Intel may obtain 10% of Apple's A7 processor orders. The patent lawsuits between Samsung and Apple have been heating up, causing the latter to reduce its reliance on the former. Apple has been shifting orders of DRAM, mobile RAM chips and panels away from Samsung. Samsung used to be the sole OEM firm for Apple's processors, but the latter has now begun to issue orders to other firms. TSMC has been said to become the second largest supplier for Apple's A7 processors and production is reportedly to begin in 2014. But recent rumors have spread that Intel may also receive Apple's orders. According to institutional investors, Samsung is likely to receive 50% of the A7 processor orders, TSMC 4...
