Sony  - once a dominant force in the mobile space played as the arch nemesis to Nokia back in its heyday ,but once the Sony Ericsson venture collapsed , Sony had difficulty in keeping up with the Jones as their random smartphones were either late in the spec war , or overpriced . With competition getting stiff , Sony could no longer waste money on making Random smartphones with outdated specs , and therefore Sony decided to launch a new flagship series called the Xperia Z . Sony has a impressive track record of keeping their old flagships up-to date , although the update process takes a bit longer than some , the updates still arrive even after the device has passed its 18 month update cycle .The flagship Xperia Z series - a Snapdragon S4 powered device with Android 4.2 was launched in the first half of 2013 and so far it has migrated to Android 5.0.2 this year , but now Sony is offering Android 5.1.1 for the handset as well as Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR handsets and the Xperia Tablet Z starting today . The devices receiving the update are - the Xperia Z (C6602, C6603 variants), Xperia ZL (C6503, C6506 variants), Xperia ZR (C5503 only) and Xperia Tablet Z Wi-Fi (SGP311, SGP312) and Xperia Tablet Z LTE models (SGP321 only) . Although Sony has a reputation for dishing updates a little late , the company has a good track record of keeping its old flagships updated even though 2 and a half years have passed since many of them rolled out . No , this is not a April fool's joke , the Sony Xperia Z , the first smartphone under the Xperia Z category is stated to get Android 5.0 Lollipop . Although Sony didnt set a time frame (as their update for current models are already way past their date) the phone will get this update and it might possibly be its last as most manufacturers end support in 18 months . The Android 5.0 lollipop update for current Sony devices are currently available for some European Xperia Z3's and Z2's and a full roll out for both devices is expected to hit next week , the update which includes a few 2014 non Z series devices including the C3 and T2 ultra are also said to get the update. the older Z1 and the ZU are stated to get it later on .The Xperia Z , (and possibly the Z tablet ) will get the 5.0 update after the successors get the update , but Xperia Z's spin offs including the ZR and the ZL might be left out . Sony announced its Android 4.4 KitKat plans earlier this month, confirming that the newest update will arrive on five Sony Xperia devices: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1. At the time, Sony referred to these as the “first raft” of products that will get KitKat, leaving the door open to further announcements down the line. Well it looks like Sony has at least confirmed which handsets it is considering to upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat via the company’s support pages. Looking at the Xperia SP support page seems to suggest that KitKat is pretty much a dead cert. Checking out the pages for the Xperia ZR, Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V says that Android 4.4 KitKat is “Under Investigation”, which we take to mean it is seeing whether it is viable to make the port.
