Two years ago , Barnes and Noble launched their Nook series of Android tablets to the market , the move , which was probably in response to Amazon's Kindle Fire series wasn't able to gain any ground in terms of tablet marketshare , so the famous Book store dropped the line in late 2013 , but now they are back , and this time , they have struck a deal with a well known , and possibly the biggest Android Tablet OEM , Samsung. At first glance , the Samsung device looks like a typical Galaxy Tab 4 , that's because the tablet , which is designed for Nook is still typical Samsung , the buttons , the design and the internals are not changed except for the addition of a dark violet color and a Barnes and Noble Android interface which substitutes for Touchwiz . Amazon has apparently dropped the price of its Kindle Fire HD ereader-tablet in what appears to be a response to Barnes & Noble’s NOOK HD cuts, dropping the 7-inch Android-based slate by as much as 15-percent in the US and UK. The price adjustment sees the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD come down to £139 in the UK (saving £20) for the 16GB model, and to $169 (saving $30) in the US, compared to the latest 7-inch NOOK HD at £129/$149 for the 16GB model. In the US, Amazon lists the Kindle Fire HD change as a “limited time” offer, though it’s worth noting that B&N has used the same nomenclature for its own discounting. Our suspicion is that the cuts will last for roughly as long as the other company’s do, given the fierce competition between the two firms. Microsoft is offering to pay $1 billion to buy the digital assets of Nook Media LLC, the digital book and college book joint venture with Barnes & Noble and other investors, according to internal documents we’ve obtained. In this plan, Microsoft would redeem preferred units in Nook Media, which also includes a college book division, leaving it with the digital operation — e-books, as well as Nook e-readers and tablets. The documents also reveal that Nook Media plans to discontinue its Android-based tablet business by the end of its 2014 fiscal year as it transitions to a model where Nook content is distributed through apps on “third-party partner” devices. Speculation about the plan to discontinue the Nook surfaced in February. The documents we have are not clear on whether the third-party tablets would be Microsoft’s own Windows 8 devices, tablets made by others (including competing platforms) or both. Bookseller Barnes & Noble has enjoyed a crazy good start with its line of Android-powered tablets. Back in December 2011, the retailer ranked an amazing fourth place in market share thanks to its Nook Color tablet, and seemed capable of turning itself into a powerful player in the tablet business. However, market forces disrupted B&N’s plans, and after a poor 2012 holiday season, the bookseller announced a dismal 26% drop in revenues from its tablet business. In this context, the fact that Barnes & Noble will bundle a free Simple Touch e-reader with every Nook HD+ tablet sold next week should come as no surprise. As reported by Reuters, the promotion could signal an effort to reduce inventories, at a moment when B&N mulls a strategy change, or even a complete exit from the hardware business.
