Bookseller Barnes & Noble has enjoyed a crazy good start with its line of Android-powered tablets. Back in December 2011, the retailer ranked an amazing fourth place in market share thanks to its Nook Color tablet, and seemed capable of turning itself into a powerful player in the tablet business. However, market forces disrupted B&N’s plans, and after a poor 2012 holiday season, the bookseller announced a dismal 26% drop in revenues from its tablet business. In this context, the fact that Barnes & Noble will bundle a free Simple Touch e-reader with every Nook HD+ tablet sold next week should come as no surprise. As reported by Reuters, the promotion could signal an effort to reduce inventories, at a moment when B&N mulls a strategy change, or even a complete exit from the hardware business. Some people will, of course, be hesitant to purchase a factory refurbished product. On February 18, Sony dropped the price of its PS Vita in Japan to 19,980 yen ($212) due to lackluster sales. According to the folks over at Joystiq, the price drop has reached parts of the US, with Sony Stores across the nation offering the PS Vita 3G for $199.97. The price is not reflected online, however, and various information was given around the drop According to JoyStiq, they called every Sony Store that was open, and nearly all of them have the PS Vita 3G for the discount price as part of a bundle that includes an 8GB memory card and a free PlayStation Network game. Only a handful of stores said they didn’t have it for the discount price, and the price change is not reflected online. When asked about why the price had dropped, various stores had different explanations. Some said that the PS Vita is being discontinued and so the price drop is permanent as a result. It looks like retailer Carphone Warehouse is desperately phasing out its Kindle Fire inventory from its online unit. Being sold for just £89, it’s a perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to try an Amazon tablet and the rich content ecosystem that comes with it. By comparison, Amazon UK sells the Kindle Fire tablet for £129. That’s £40 in savings!
