CES 2013 in a Nutshell

CES 2013 - in a nutshell  (Ashan Fernando -Mashdroid magazine )
Okay folks, it's the end of another Consumer Electronics Show. We were a bit disappointed this time because we didn't see any worthy device or gadget from serious contenders except Sony. Instead ,the stage was occupied by emerging players like Huwawei, ZTE and Alcatel and less known names like Archos and Vizio.
Well quite the most important device was Xperia Z, (along with Xperia ZL) of Sony. It packed a 1080p display of 441 PPI with a Snapdragon S4 pro chip clocked at 1.5 GHz inside, delivering the Android 4.1 for the run, and was built waterproof! Good job Sony.
It was NVidia that made the other huge impact with  their latest Tegra 4 SoC, which packs a 72core GPU paired with four Cortex A15 cores, and of course Project Shield, an Android gaming console that packs this chip set under the hood.
Huwawei, on the other hand had some nice devices up their sleeve to show, of which, Ascend D2 with the now standard 5 inch 1080p display and the giant 6.1 inch Ascend Mate were serious competitors in the Android realm, while their first Windows phone 8 running Ascend W1 was also in a side for a watch.
ZTE Grand S too packed some beastly specs, a 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 pro and a 441ppi 5inch display, with jelly beans to chew them all.
Well Alcatel seriously had done a great job with dozens of One touch smart phones and tablets, of course you have come across them in previous pages.
We didn't see a device from Samsung but they had a little surprise for us with their 8 core Exynos 5 beast and the demonstration of foldable display.
Qualcomm announced the new series of their chip sets, namely Snapdragon 200, 400, 600, and 800, leaving from their S series nomenclature.
Vizio had a couple of cool devices, a true Nexus 7 competitor and the latest Tegra 4 SoC packing 10 inch tablet with 2560×1600 resolution, which will definitely give Nexus 10 a run for its money. Archos also showed a series of beautiful slates, one with the new iPad's resolution, yes, really worth trying one out!
Other than the devices we had some nice Android powered Ovens and Refrigerators that expand the mighty hand of the world's most popular mobile OS.
Well that's it for this year's CES guys. Quite disappointed? Not really though. True we didn't see anything from HTC and much from other Android behemoths, but this CES, in my opinion, was a brilliant playground for the emerging names in the industry.

HTC One to sell as TD 101 at China Mobile

HTC decided to invest in such a brand by launching the One series of smartphones last year, although the company was not able to impose its own product names to certain carriers. Then, just a few days ago, the company launched the HTC One, which is going to be the company’s only One-branded handset this year, a make-or-break kind of project for the Taiwanese Android maker that’s still having a tough time fighting against the competition, especially Samsung. We were under the impression that HTC will further invest in its One brand and not budge to carrier demands anymore when it comes to changing the name of the product – in the U.S., AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are going to sell it as the HTC One. But it looks like things aren’t necessarily so, and no, it’s not Verizon that’s going to get its way selling the One as the Droid DNA Plus, as it was recently rumored. We’re looking at China Mobile this time around, which has announced the HTC One as the HTC TD 101. That’s certa...
