Android 12 beta - Beauty is not only skin deep

Google officially announced their new Android 12 Beta program today during their Google IO 2021 event (May 18th). The new operating system, which was only available as a insider/developer preview is now available for all Pixel devices from the Pixel 3 right up to the Pixel 5 as well as a few selected Xiaomi, OnePlus devices and one flagship model from TCL, Sharp, HMD Nokia, Asus, Vivo and Realme (See below for a device list)

The new Android 12 (beta) brings about a whole new re-design borrowing elements from One-UI, Oxygen Os and some elements from Miui. From new system wide color and custom theme options (called "Material You") to the option of sending apps to a hibernation mode where unused apps could be reduced in size by clearing its permissions and cache.

Security is also said to be a key focus point in Android 12. Users could expect to see which apps accessed different features during screen on time and revoke them easily if necessary. Android 12 is also said to feature a universal smart remote app which would allow an Android smartphone to control Chromecast or Android Smart TV's from popular manufacturers directly - although the feature has been available in many Android devices in the past, the direct implementation of this feature into Android is a first.

Many other features Android 12 expects to feature are the quick tiles in the notification shade, these replace the now boring circular shortcuts (as long as Android manufacturers don't skin it).Android 12 also features a larger Always on display (AOD) clock widget and new widgets with soft flat designs.

Technical additions which are said to come in Android 12 include Scrolling screenshots, easy one handed use, haptic feedback patterns for apps based on content, the addition of AVIF image compression, MPEG-H audio passthrough for apps, Default HVEC video compression and AVC for apps that don't support HVEC,New network sharing and accessibility options for developers.
