California Streaming - Apple announces iPhone 13 series, new iPads and Watch Series 7

Apple has announced their latest devices for 2021 in their September launch event named - California Streaming. The event, limited to an online presence featured the following announcements: Apple's iPhone's and new iPads are available for pre order and will ship on the 24th of September with iOS/iPadOS 15.

iPhone 13 and 13 Mini.

The iPhone 13 series is Apple's bread and butter smartphone as this is basically the entry Level model for those who don't want pro features or don't fancy pony up a thousand bucks for a smartphone that basically does 90% of the work. Like last year, Apple has kept the "mini" alive by announcing the iPhone 13 mini alongside the standard iPhone 13 model.

At first glance, the handsets look similar to last year's offering with the exception of the rear camera placement which is diagonal instead of the standard vertical placement. The notch has also been reduced by 20 percent allowing more of the new (6.1" 2532x1170 and 5.4" 2340x1080) XDR OLED display to shine.

The cameras on the new iPhone 13 series have been revamped and now has a 12mp wide sensor f1.6 with sensor shift OIS for improved low light stabilization ( a feature from the 12 pro) and is supported by a 12mp 120 degree ultra wide sensor. The camera features new algorithms to process depth as well as allow the processing of color presets (skin tones and depth levels)  which can be pre applied instead of a filter which usually crushes image quality. The front sensor array consists of a Apple's face-unlock and 12MP selfie camera.

The most significant new feature on the new cameras is its new cinematic mode which lets users do "focus pulls" on a foreground object and background objects or intelligently detect faces or objects and set focus accordingly. The feature is not perfect as it relies on autofocus and AI, but third party apps could make use of these features in the future to control the speed of the focus pull - allowing more opportunity for creators - Apple also demoed a short film shot on the new phone.

Processing power on the new iPhone 13 is handled by Apples A15 Bionic - a hex-core 5nm chip paired with 6GB of RAM and onboard storage starting at 128GB for the base model (64GB option is gone), you can also spec the model in 256GB or 512GB as well.

Rest of the specs include the option for 2x e sims (basically one physical sim and 2 e-sims), improved battery life, 1.5 hours for the mini and 2.5 hours for the standard model, Magsafe charging and the legacy lightning port. Prices start at $699 for the mini and $799 for the standard iPhone 13.

iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The pro iPhone 13 lineup are basically the top of the line flagship iPhones for 2021, the duo, announced with new high refresh rate displays, new cameras and hardware upgrades follow a familiar design language as the iPhone 12 Pro series and thus, the easiest way to spot one is by identifying it from its new "hero color". - Sierra blue.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max feature new 120hz XDR OLED displays featuring a smaller notch - 20% less) with (6.1" 2532x1170 and 6.7" 2778x1284) resolutions for the Pro and Pro Max. The displays feature active refresh rate control where the phone decides to control the 120Hz refresh rate based on the scenario (if you are scrolling a page - the 120Hz is active while viewing a static image drops the rate to 10hz to save battery life.

The cameras on the duo have been revamped with the trio featuring a 12MP wide f1.5 camera with Sensor Shift OIS, a 12MP ultra wide 120 degree sensor f1.8 and a 12MP telephoto (77mm eqv with 3x optical zoom) f 2.8 and a LiDAR sensor for depth mapping. The cameras also feature a macro mode on the telephoto camera and allows photographing subjects as close as 2cm and Apple allows users shoot in Apple ProRAW for RAW photographs and  Like the iPhone 13, the new cameras feature cinematic mode for focus pulling and it can record in Apple ProRES format in 4K (reduced to 1080p in the base 128GB model due to the wast amounts of storage required by ProRes). The front sensor array consists of a Apple's face-unlock and 12MP selfie snapper

The phone, like the standard model, feature Apple's A15 Bionic and this is paired with 8GB of RAM with 128GB/256GB/512GB or 1TB if you want to record in ProRes.

Other specs include 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours battery improvement over the outdoing models and and starts at $999 for the Pro and $1099 for the Pro max.

iPad mini

Apple didn't leave out its iPad mini this time around, and the new iPad mini 6th gen, ditches the home button and the large bezels for a more iPad Pro design and it now even has USB C - ditching the limited lightning port.

The front of the tablet features a 8.3' 2266x1488 resolution IPS display, this also has support for Apple Pencil 2 stylus support.

The tablet has a 12mp front sensor and the rear Side has a 12MP sensor with LED flash, due to the lack of face unlock, the tablet has a fingerprint sensor embedded into the power button on top and it sits alongside the volume rockers.

The tablet - powered by Apple's new A15 Bionic has 4GB of RAM and wither 64GB or 256GB options with wifi or 5G options starting at $499 for the 64GB Wifi or $649 for the cellular version.

iPad (9th Gen)

iPad (9th gen) is basically Apple's most affordable option with a starting price of $329 and is similar to the previous generation except for the internals, and thus the new model has the same 2160x1620 resolution (non laminated) IPS display at 10.2" and the main camera is still 8MP with the exception of the front 12MP (122 degree ultra wide with ) sensor which will be beneficial for online classes as it now features AF tracking with "center stage".

The processor on the tablet has been upgraded to a Apple A13 Bionic (same as the iPhone 11) and comes with 3GB of RAM with 64GB or 256GB of storage. The tablet also has support for Apple's 1st Generation Apple pencil and thus it could be charged via the lightning port on this model.

Apple Watch Series 7

The new Apple Watch improves upon the outgoing Series 6 by featuring an improved "crack resistant" glass which is now even more curved and thicker and sports a larger display which now reaches the edges even more than the outgoing Watch Series 6 and has Watch OS 5.

The model, which comes in 41mm or 45mm watch sizes and is backwards compatible with previous generation watch straps as well. Pricing starts at $399. The Watch will be available later this fall without a clear launch date.

Apple will also be bundling Apple fitness + with a three months free subscription when you purchase a new watch. Apple fitness + has also been expanded to 15 countries.

HTC One to sell as TD 101 at China Mobile

HTC decided to invest in such a brand by launching the One series of smartphones last year, although the company was not able to impose its own product names to certain carriers. Then, just a few days ago, the company launched the HTC One, which is going to be the company’s only One-branded handset this year, a make-or-break kind of project for the Taiwanese Android maker that’s still having a tough time fighting against the competition, especially Samsung. We were under the impression that HTC will further invest in its One brand and not budge to carrier demands anymore when it comes to changing the name of the product – in the U.S., AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile are going to sell it as the HTC One. But it looks like things aren’t necessarily so, and no, it’s not Verizon that’s going to get its way selling the One as the Droid DNA Plus, as it was recently rumored. We’re looking at China Mobile this time around, which has announced the HTC One as the HTC TD 101. That’s certa...
